I'd Rather Laugh Instead                            Laughter

Before too long the solstice will be here and then we'll turn the page to another year.    But what a time the old one's given us; all the while war and natural disaster.                   We have at once tropical storms in the Atlantic and blizzards sweeping across the Great Plains of North America.

We've had earthquakes in Pakistan and bombings in London.                                           The city of New Orleans has been reduced to a smudge on the map by the most powerful hurricane on record. And the W.H.O. says it's only a matter of time before the bird flu kills millions around the globe.

To say it's been a struggle to remain optimistic is an understatement.                           Perhaps we should forget trite sayings such as, it's always darkest before the dawn,    Or the only thing we have to fear is fear itself.                                                                   Maybe things really are as bad as they seem and we should be scared shitless.

But I only have to look into my daughter's eyes to find my reason to live,                         And to laugh and be joyful.                                                                                                     Oh cruel life I could cry but I'd much rather laugh instead.                                                There's no profit in pessimism.
